The Sages of the Talmud

Rav Achai stands at the seam between the last of the amoraim and the Savoraim — the generation that received the Talmud as Rav Ashi and Ravina left it and gave it the shape in which it was handed on. The roster places him among the Savoraim and marks the entry for review, because the sources differ on where exactly in that transition he belongs.

He is named some twenty times across eleven tractates, spread very thinly, and the Talmud brings him raising the objection or supplying the resolution rather than founding a position of his own — which is the characteristic work of his generation.
