The Sages of the Talmud

רבי זכריה בן אבקולס Rabbi Zechariah ben Avkulas

Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 3 times across 2 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 1st generation×3 named in the Bavli2 tractates

Rabbi Zechariah ben Avkulas, of the first tannaitic generation, appears in the Talmud's account of the destruction of the Temple. When the offering the emperor had sent was found to carry a blemish, the sages considered bringing it nonetheless for the sake of peace with the kingdom, and considered putting to death the man who had brought the matter about; Rabbi Zechariah objected on both counts.

The Talmud closes the account with its own judgement — that his humility, his unwillingness to decide beyond the strict rule, destroyed the House and burned the Sanctuary. He is named three times, twice in Gittin, where the account stands, and once in Shabbat.

Whose humility, the Gemara says, destroyed the House.
