The Sages of the Talmud

רבי יאשיה Rabbi Yoshiya

Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 108 times across 23 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 3rd generation×108 named in the Bavli23 tractates

Rabbi Yoshiya, of the third tannaitic generation, belonged to the school of Rabbi Yishmael and is the constant partner of Rabbi Yonatan: where a verse's clauses might be read together or held apart, the two of them take the opposing sides, and the halakhic midrash is largely built on their exchange.

He is named some hundred and ten times, heaviest in Sanhedrin, Sotah and Yoma, and is cited by other sages some nine times. His importance to a learner is method rather than biography — he is one of the two names to know when a derivation turns on how a sentence in the Torah is parsed.

Of the school of Rabbi Yishmael.
