רבי יוחנן הסנדלר Rabbi Yochanan HaSandlar
Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 17 times across 8 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Yochanan HaSandlar, of the third tannaitic generation, was a student of Rabbi Akiva. The by-name is read by the reference works as his trade, and also as his place — Alexandria — the two readings sitting side by side in the tradition.
He is named some seventeen times across eight tractates, heaviest in Ketubot. His best-known position is the strictest of the three on food cooked on Shabbat: cooked deliberately, it is never to be eaten, not by him and not by others. In Avot he teaches that every gathering for the sake of Heaven will in the end endure.
