רבי יהודה בן תימא Rabbi Yehuda ben Tema
Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 12 times across 6 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Yehuda ben Tema, of the second tannaitic generation, is known to every learner for the charge in Avot: be bold as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer and strong as a lion to do the will of your Father in heaven.
In the law he is remembered for the position on impossible conditions — that a condition which cannot be fulfilled at the end but was stipulated at the outset is no condition at all — and Rav ruled that the law follows him. He is named a dozen times across six tractates, heaviest in Bava Metzia, where that ruling stands.
'be bold as a leopard'.
