רבי יהודה בן בבא Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava
Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 33 times across 12 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava, of the second tannaitic generation, is remembered above all for one act. When the Roman decree made ordination a capital offence for the one who gave it, the one who received it and the town where it was given, he went and sat between two mountains, between two towns and between two Shabbat boundaries, and there ordained five elders — Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Shimon, Rabbi Yose and Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua. He told them to run, and stayed, and the tradition says three hundred iron spears were driven into him.
He is named some thirty times across twelve tractates, heaviest in Eruvin and Yevamot.
Ordained five students at the cost of his life.
