רבי יהושע בן לוי Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi
Amora of the Land of Israel · 1st generation (c. 220–250 CE) — named 446 times across 35 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, of Lod, belongs to the first amoraic generation in Eretz Yisrael. He is one of the Talmud's great aggadists, and much of what the Bavli holds about prayer, the merit of Torah study and the world to come comes through him — he is cited by other sages some sixty-eight times.
The tradition surrounds him with Elijah the prophet, who is said to have kept his company, and with the account of his entering the Garden of Eden in his lifetime, having taken the Angel of Death's knife. He taught that a man should always complete his portions with the congregation, the Scripture twice and the translation once. He is named most often in Berachot.
Of Lod; the aggadist who met Elijah.
