Amora of the Land of Israel · 1st generation×266 named in the Bavli35 tractates1 as a patronymic

Rabbi Yannai, of Sepphoris, belongs to the first amoraic generation in Eretz Yisrael and was Rabbi Yochanan's teacher. He was a man of means with a school of his own, and the Talmud cites the teachings of the house of Rabbi Yannai as a body distinct from his individual rulings.

His best-known saying is one of plain honesty about the limits of understanding: it is not in our hands to explain either the tranquility of the wicked or the suffering of the righteous. He is named some two hundred and sixty-five times across thirty-five tractates and is cited by other sages some twenty times.

Of Sepphoris; Rabbi Yochanan's teacher.
