Rabbi Tanchum bar Chanilai, of the third amoraic generation in Eretz Yisrael; the Bavli writes the patronymic in more than one form, and the roster marks the entry for review.

He is named some thirteen times across eight tractates, heaviest in Sanhedrin and in Shekalim, whose Gemara in our Shas comes from the Yerushalmi. He carries teachings in the names of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi and Rabbi Simlai, which places him among the transmitters of the land in his generation.

Of Eretz Yisrael.
