The Sages of the Talmud

רבי שמעון בן נתנאל Rabbi Shimon ben Netanel

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — not named in a form this corpus separates from a namesake.

Tanna · 2nd generation

Rabbi Shimon ben Netanel, of the second tannaitic generation, was one of the five students of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai, and the one his teacher named as a fearer of sin.

His name is not written in this edition of the Bavli, and he stands in the index at no mentions — a fact about the corpus rather than about him. What is firmly known of him is his place among those five, and it is on that account that the roster holds him.

One of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai's five.

The gematria of the name

Computed from the consonantal letters of רבי שמעון בן נתנאל by the same engine that runs every search. This is the value of a NAME — no word of the Talmud is valued anywhere in this app.

This corpus never writes this name on its own. Either the Bavli does not name him at all, or every form it uses is one a sage of the same name also answers to — and this index credits nobody rather than guessing. He is in the roster, at zero, because leaving him out would be its own kind of lie.
