רבי שמעון בן מנסיא Rabbi Shimon ben Menasya

Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 46 times across 17 tractates of the Bavli.

Rabbi Shimon ben Menasya, of the third tannaitic generation, belonged to the group the Talmud calls the holy congregation — sages who divided their day into thirds between Torah, prayer and labour, and are cited under that name as well as their own.

He is named some forty-six times across seventeen tractates, spread thinly, heaviest in Bava Kamma and Bava Batra. His best-known teaching is the reading of the verse about the Sabbath — that the Sabbath is given into your hands and you are not given into its hands — which is one of the sources for setting aside the Sabbath to save a life.
