The Sages of the Talmud

רבי שמעון בן חלפתא Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta

Tanna · 5th generation (c. 170–200 CE) — named 8 times across 6 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 5th generation×8 named in the Bavli6 tractates

Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta, of the last tannaitic generation, was a companion of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi and belongs to the generation that stands between the tannaim and the first amoraim.

He is named eight times across six tractates, most of them in Chullin. What the Talmud preserves under his name is chiefly aggada rather than halakha — sayings, observations drawn from the natural world, and conversations in which he answers Rebbi. Beyond his place in that circle, the reference tradition holds little that can be stated firmly.

A companion of Rebbi.
