רבי שמעון Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai

Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 2,423 times across 38 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 3rd generation×2,423 named in the Bavli38 tractates4 as a patronymic

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, of the third tannaitic generation, was among the students Rabbi Akiva raised after the deaths of the first, and unqualified רבי שמעון in the Bavli is he. Condemned by Rome for speaking against the empire, he hid thirteen years in a cave with his son Rabbi Elazar — the story every learner knows, and the reason his teaching carries the weight it does.

In halakha he is the one who expounds the reason behind a verse and rules by it, which puts him against Rabbi Yehuda through much of the Mishnah. The Mechilta and Sifrei of his school preserve his midrash, and the tradition ascribes the Zohar to him. He is named some two thousand four hundred times, most densely in Shabbat and the sacrificial orders.

Thirteen years in the cave; unqualified רבי שמעון in the Bavli is he.
