רבי פנחס בן יאיר Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair
Tanna · 4th generation (c. 135–170 CE) — named 14 times across 7 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair, of the fourth tannaitic generation, is remembered for the ladder of piety that carries his name — the chain that runs from carefulness to alacrity, from cleanliness to abstinence, on up to holiness, the holy spirit and the resurrection of the dead. Of him it is also told that he was going to redeem captives, came to the river Ginai and asked it to divide, and that in all his days he never broke bread that was not his own.
He is named some fourteen times across seven tractates, five of them in Shekalim, whose Gemara in our Shas comes from the Yerushalmi.
