The Sages of the Talmud

רבי פפייס Rabbi Pappias

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 6 times across 5 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×6 named in the Bavli5 tractates

Rabbi Pappias, of the second tannaitic generation, was a colleague of Rabbi Akiva and of Rabbi Yehoshua, and the Talmud preserves him chiefly in the manner of testimony: he reports an early practice or ruling, and a colleague answers him.

He is named six times, twice in Sanhedrin and once each in Beitzah, Nazir, Rosh Hashana and Temurah. Beyond that manner of citation and his generation, the reference tradition holds little about him that can be stated firmly.

A colleague of Rabbi Akiva.
