The Sages of the Talmud

רבי מתיא בן חרש Rabbi Matya ben Charash

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 10 times across 3 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×10 named in the Bavli3 tractates

Rabbi Matya ben Charash, of the second tannaitic generation, founded a school in Rome, and the tradition records questions sent to him there from the sages of the land.

His presence in the Bavli is concentrated almost entirely in Yoma, and in one subject: what may be done for a man in danger on Shabbat and Yom Kippur. He permits medicine to be put in the throat of one who is ailing, because a doubt about life sets the Shabbat aside — and every doubt about life sets the Shabbat aside. He is named some ten times in three tractates.
