Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov is the tanna of whom it was said that his teaching is a small measure, but clean — few rulings, and every one of them relied upon. He is the authority behind much of what the Mishnah records about the structure of the Temple and its courts; in this corpus his rulings fall heaviest in Yoma, and after it in Yevamot, Eruvin and Sotah.

The tradition knows two sages of this name, one in the generation of Yavneh and one in the generation of Usha, and the Bavli's unqualified form does not mark which is meant; they are not separated here. He is named some three hundred times across thirty-four tractates.

'a kav but clean'. The Bavli's Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov covers both the first and the second sage of that name; they are not separated here.
