רבי אלעזר בן שמוע Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua
Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 22 times across 11 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua, of the third tannaitic generation, was a student of Rabbi Akiva and one of the five elders whom Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava ordained at the cost of his life during the Roman decree. Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi was his student, and the tradition calls him the greatest of the sages of his day. To him belongs the counsel that a man hold his student's honour as dear as his own, and his teacher's reverence as the reverence of Heaven.
He is named a little over twenty times across eleven tractates, heaviest in Menachot and Zevachim, the order of sacrifices. The Bavli's unqualified רבי אלעזר is read as the amora Elazar ben Pedat, not as him.
Greatest of the sages of his day. Unqualified רבי אלעזר in the Bavli is indexed to the Amora ben Pedat — see ambiguous.json.
