רבי אלעזר בן חרסום Rabbi Elazar ben Charsum
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 6 times across 2 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Elazar ben Charsum, of the first tannaitic generation, was a High Priest in the last years of the Temple, and the aggada's great example of wealth that excuses no man from Torah: the tradition tells of the thousand towns and thousand ships he inherited, and of his leaving them behind to sit and learn.
Five of his six mentions are in Yoma, among the accounts of the priesthood and the service, and the sixth is in Kiddushin. He is named there in the passage that sets the rich man, the poor man and the wicked man each before the judgement of his own excuse.
The wealthy High Priest of the aggada.
