Rabbi Elazar ben Chisma, of the second tannaitic generation, was known among the sages as a calculator and an astronomer — the man of whom it was said that he could reckon the drops in the sea, and to whom the tradition credits the saying that the calculations of the seasons and gematria are a seasoning to wisdom. The Bavli writes him both with ben and without it.

He is named some ten times across six tractates, heaviest in Pesachim, and he appears beside Rabbi Yochanan ben Gudgada, with whom the tradition pairs him.

Astronomer and calculator.
