רבי אלעזר בן עזריה Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah
Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 165 times across 32 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Elazar ben Azaryah, of the second tannaitic generation, was a priest of great wealth and the tenth generation in descent from Ezra, and he was made nasi at eighteen when Rabban Gamliel was removed from office. The tradition tells that his beard turned white overnight so that he would carry the authority the office needed, and his words — I am like a man of seventy years — stand in the Haggadah to this day.
On the day he took office the guard at the study-house door was removed and every student admitted, and the Talmud remembers it as the day many benches were added. He is named some hundred and sixty-five times, heaviest in Ketubot, Shabbat and Berachot.
Made nasi at eighteen; tenth from Ezra.
