רבי חייא בר אבא Rabbi Chiya bar Abba
Amora of the Land of Israel · 3rd generation (c. 290–320 CE) — named 321 times across 35 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Chiya bar Abba came up from Babylonia and became one of Rabbi Yochanan's leading students in the third amoraic generation in Eretz Yisrael. He is above all a transmitter: he is quoted as saying a teaching in another's name some hundred and eighty-five times in this corpus, and the formula Rabbi Chiya bar Abba said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan is one of the most common in the Talmud.
He travelled, taught and lived in poverty, and Rabbi Abbahu, who had wealth and standing, deferred to him in learning. He is named some three hundred and twenty times, most in Berachot and Shabbat.
A bearer of Rabbi Yochanan's teaching.
