The Sages of the Talmud

רבי חידקא Rabbi Chidka

Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 14 times across 5 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 3rd generation×14 named in the Bavli5 tractates

Rabbi Chidka, of the third tannaitic generation, is known for one position above all: that a man owes four meals on Shabbat where the other sages hold three. The Talmud brings the dispute as a reading of a single verse in which the word today appears three times, and Rabbi Chidka counts the night meal outside those three.

The distribution proves the point. Of his fourteen mentions, nine are in Shabbat, and the remaining five are scattered across four other tractates. He is a tanna remembered for a fixed handful of positions rather than for a body of teaching.

Held that four meals are due on Shabbat.
