רבי חנינא סגן הכהנים Rabbi Chanina, deputy High Priest
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 26 times across 8 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Chanina, deputy High Priest, of the first tannaitic generation, served in the Temple and outlived it, and his value to the tradition is that of an eyewitness. His characteristic formula is a report of what the priests did in practice — never in all their days did they refrain from this, they were not particular about that — and the Mishnah preserves those reports as testimony rather than as argument.
He is named some twenty-six times, and in only eight tractates: Pesachim, Yoma, Menachot and Zevachim carry almost all of them. The distribution is the man.
Deputy High Priest; a witness to Temple practice.
