רבי חנינא בן תרדיון Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 11 times across 4 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×11 named in the Bavli4 tractates

Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon, of the second tannaitic generation, is one of the ten martyrs of the Roman persecution. He was seized for gathering crowds and teaching Torah in public, and the tradition tells that he was burnt with the scroll wrapped about him, damp wool laid on his heart to draw out his dying; and that when his students asked what he saw, he answered that the parchments were burning and the letters were flying up. The Bavli writes his name in both spellings, Chanina and Chananya.

He is named some eleven times in only four tractates, six of them in Avodah Zarah, where that account stands.

Burnt with the Torah scroll wrapped round him; one of the Ten Martyrs.
