The Sages of the Talmud

רבי חנינא בן גמליאל Rabbi Chanina ben Gamliel

Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 41 times across 17 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 3rd generation×41 named in the Bavli17 tractates

Rabbi Chanina ben Gamliel, of the third tannaitic generation, was a son of Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh. He is heard as a dissenting voice in the Mishnah and in baraitot rather than as the head of a school, and the Bavli writes his name in two spellings, Chanina and Chananya, which the roster holds together as one man.

He is named some forty times across seventeen tractates, heaviest in Kiddushin, and stands most often beside the tannaim of Rabbi Meir's generation.

Son of Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh.
