רבי חנינא בן דוסא Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 17 times across 8 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, of the first tannaitic generation, is remembered not for rulings but for deeds. He would pray over the sick and know from the fluency of the prayer in his mouth whether it had been accepted; the rain stopped when he walked and returned when he reached home; and of him the tradition says that the whole world is sustained for the sake of Chanina His son, while Chanina himself makes do with a measure of carobs from one Shabbat eve to the next.
He is named some seventeen times across eight tractates, heaviest in Taanit and Berachot — precisely the tractates of prayer and of the fasts, which is where a man like him belongs.
The man of deeds whose prayers were fluent.
