Amora of the Land of Israel · 3rd generation×52 named in the Bavli19 tractates

Rabbi Chanina bar Papa, of the third amoraic generation in Eretz Yisrael, is one of the aggadists of his generation, and his expositions of verses appear throughout the Bavli's narrative passages.

He is named some fifty times across nineteen tractates, weighted toward Sotah, Berachot and Sanhedrin — the places where the Talmud turns from ruling to exposition. He is cited beside Reish Lakish, Rabbi Zeira and Rabbi Abbahu, which places him in the Tiberias and Caesarea circles of his day.

An aggadist.
