Rabbi Chananya ben Akavya, of the third tannaitic generation. The Bavli writes the name in two spellings, Chananya and Chanina, which the roster holds as one man and marks for review.

He is named close to twenty times but in only six tractates — Eruvin and Ketubot carry more than half — the narrow footprint of a tanna remembered for a handful of positions rather than for a body of teaching. He stands beside Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh and Rabbi Yehuda in the corpus.
