The Sages of the Talmud

רבי חמא בר ביסא Rabbi Chama bar Bisa

Tanna · 5th generation (c. 170–200 CE) — named 2 times across 1 tractate of the Bavli.

Tanna · 5th generation×2 named in the Bavli1 tractate

Rabbi Chama bar Bisa, of the last tannaitic generation, was the father of Rabbi Oshaya, and the Talmud tells of him the account of the man who left home to learn and came back after twelve years — who, having heard what befell another that returned unannounced, sat down at the door of the study hall and listened to his own son teaching without knowing him.

Both of his mentions in this corpus are in Ketubot, in the chapter where that story is told.

Father of Rabbi Oshaya.
