רבי אבהו Rabbi Abbahu
Amora of the Land of Israel · 3rd generation (c. 290–320 CE) — named 460 times across 36 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Abbahu headed the academy at Caesarea in the third amoraic generation and was Rabbi Yochanan's student. Wealthy, of imposing bearing and fluent in Greek, he was the sage the community sent to speak with the Roman government, and the Talmud records many of his disputations with those who challenged the tradition.
The arrangement of the shofar blasts that is still followed — the doubt over what a teruah is, answered by sounding every possibility — is his ruling. He is quoted in others' names some eighty-six times and is named some four hundred and sixty times, most heavily in Sanhedrin. The Talmud also preserves his deference to Rabbi Chiya bar Abba, whose learning he ranked above his own standing.
Head of Caesarea; spokesman to the Roman government.
