Rabbi Abba went up from Babylonia to Eretz Yisrael, where he learned from Rabbi Yochanan, having first learned from Rav Huna in Babylonia; he belongs to the third amoraic generation. He is quoted in others' names some fifty times.

More than one sage bears this name, and the Bavli's unqualified רבי אבא is not always the same man, so this entry is marked for review rather than decided. His three hundred and sixteen mentions are spread over thirty-five tractates, with Chullin, Shabbat and Bava Batra the heaviest.

Went up from Babylonia; more than one sage of the name is possible.
