רבן גמליאל Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh
Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 500 times across 32 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh, of the second tannaitic generation, was nasi after Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai, in the generation that had to rebuild Jewish life without a Temple. Under him the order of the eighteen blessings was fixed, the calendar was brought under the court's authority, and the disputes left over from the schools of Hillel and Shammai were largely settled. He was the father of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel II.
He held the dignity of the court above all, which brought him into the confrontation with Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya over the calendar and, in the end, to his own removal from office for a time — a passage the Talmud tells without softening it, including his going to Rabbi Yehoshua's door to ask forgiveness. Unqualified רבן גמליאל in the Bavli is read as him by convention.
Nasi at Yavneh. Unqualified רבן גמליאל is indexed here by convention — Rabban Gamliel the Elder keeps only his own qualified form.
