רבן גמליאל הזקן Rabban Gamliel the Elder
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 13 times across 9 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabban Gamliel the Elder, of the first tannaitic generation, was a grandson of Hillel and nasi in the last decades of the Temple. The ordinances recorded in his name are the classic instances of a takanah made for the good order of the world: that a husband may not annul a bill of divorce before another court once he has sent it, and that a widow collecting her marriage settlement swears rather than be left unable to remarry.
He is named some thirteen times across nine tractates, heaviest in Gitin, where those ordinances stand. The Bavli's unqualified רבן גמליאל is read by convention as his grandson, Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh.
Grandson of Hillel; nasi in the Temple's last decades. Unqualified רבן גמליאל is indexed to Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh — see ambiguous.json.
