מר בר רב אשי Mar bar Rav Ashi (Tavyomi)

Amora of Babylonia · 7th generation (c. 425–460 CE) — named 91 times across 24 tractates of the Bavli.

Amora of Babylonia · 7th generation×91 named in the Bavli24 tractates

Mar bar Rav Ashi, whose given name was Tavyomi, was the son of Rav Ashi and headed the academy at Sura after him, in the seventh Babylonian generation. He belongs to the last years of the amoraic age, when the material Rav Ashi had ordered was being settled into its final form.

He is named some ninety times across twenty-four tractates, heaviest in Bava Batra and Chullin, and is regularly cited beside Ravina and Rav Acha of Difti. Where he rules, the Gemara often gives his decision as the practice actually followed, which is how the last generation's voice enters the law.

Head of Sura after his father.
