אלישע בן אבויה Elisha ben Avuya (Acher)
Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 2 times across 2 tractates of the Bavli.
Elisha ben Avuya, whom the Talmud after his fall calls simply Acher — the other one — was of the second tannaitic generation and the teacher of Rabbi Meir, who went on learning from him and whom the tradition praises for it: he ate the fruit and threw away the peel.
He is one of the four who entered the orchard, and of him it is said that he cut the shoots. He is named only twice in this corpus under his own name, in Chagigah and Moed Katan; the long account of him in Chagigah speaks of him almost throughout as Acher, which this index does not read as a name.
Entered the orchard and cut the shoots; Rabbi Meir's teacher.
