חנן בן אבישלום Chanan ben Avishalom
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 2 times across 1 tractate of the Bavli.
Chanan ben Avishalom, of the first tannaitic generation, was one of the judges of civil law in Jerusalem in the last years of the Temple, named in the Mishnah beside Admon. The rulings the two of them left are among the earliest decisions of the Jerusalem courts that the tradition preserves.
Both of his mentions in this corpus stand in Ketubot, in the chapter that records those rulings — the case of the wife whose husband has gone overseas, and what she may claim for her maintenance while he is away.
The second Jerusalem judge of civil law.
