The Sages of the Talmud

בן זומא Shimon ben Zoma

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 37 times across 14 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×37 named in the Bavli14 tractates

Shimon ben Zoma, of the second tannaitic generation, was a student of Rabbi Akiva and one of the four who entered the orchard — of whom, as the tradition tells it, he gazed and was stricken. Like ben Azzai he is called by his father's name without the title Rabbi, having died before the elders could ordain him.

He is named close to forty times across fourteen tractates, heaviest in Yoma, Berachot and Chagigah. His best-known teachings are the four questions of Avot answered in turn — who is wise, who is strong, who is rich, who is honoured.

Entered the orchard and was stricken.
