בן עזאי Shimon ben Azzai

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 151 times across 27 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×151 named in the Bavli27 tractates

Shimon ben Azzai, of the second tannaitic generation, was Rabbi Akiva's student and, in learning, nearly his equal; he is always called simply Ben Azzai, without the title, as is Ben Zoma, because he died before receiving ordination. He never married, saying that his soul desired Torah and the world could be sustained by others.

He was one of the four who entered the orchard — the passage on those who approached the deepest matters — and of him it is said that he looked and died. The Talmud records that when Ben Azzai died the diligent ceased. He taught that one mitzvah draws another after it, and one transgression another, and that the reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah. He is named some hundred and fifty times.

Entered the orchard and died; 'the grinding pepper'.
