בבא בן בוטא Bava ben Buta
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 8 times across 5 tractates of the Bavli.
Bava ben Buta belongs to the first tannaitic generation, the men of the last years of the Temple. He was a disciple of Shammai, and he is remembered for a scrupulousness that went beyond what the law required of him: the Talmud tells that he would bring a suspensive guilt-offering every day of the year, lest he had sinned without knowing it.
His best-known appearance is the account in Bava Batra in which Herod, having destroyed the sages, comes to him unrecognised and is counselled to rebuild the Temple as his atonement. He is named eight times, across Bava Batra, Keritot, Nedarim, Beitzah and Gittin.
Counselled Herod to rebuild the Temple.
