The Sages of the Talmud

אבטליון Avtalyon

Zugot · 4th Pair (c. 170 BCE – 10 CE) — named 3 times across 2 tractates of the Bavli.

Zugot · 4th Pair×3 named in the Bavli2 tractates

Avtalyon belongs to the fourth of the five Pairs, serving with Shemayah in the generation before Hillel and Shammai; the two were Hillel's teachers, and the tradition remembers them as descendants of converts who rose to lead the sages of their day.

His is the counsel that the sages should be careful with their words, lest they incur exile, and their students drink of evil waters and die, and the Name of Heaven be profaned. He is named only three times in this corpus, twice in Yoma and once in Chagigah — a small footprint for a sage whose place in the chain of transmission is so large.

Of the fourth pair; teacher of Hillel.
