אבוה דשמואל Abba bar Abba (Shmuel's father)
Amora of Babylonia · 1st generation (c. 220–250 CE) — named 81 times across 26 tractates of the Bavli.
Abba bar Abba, of the first Babylonian generation, is almost never called by his own name in the Talmud: he is the father of Shmuel, and that is how the Bavli cites him, some eighty times over. He was a merchant of Nehardea, and he taught his son, who became the master of the generation.
He appears most often in the company of Levi bar Sisi, with whom he studied and ruled. The Talmud tells of his care with other people's money held in trust, and of the account Shmuel gave of him after his death. He is named across twenty-six tractates, heaviest in Ketubot and Chullin.
Always named as Shmuel's father.
