The Sages of the Talmud

אבא שאול Abba Shaul

Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 165 times across 30 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 3rd generation×165 named in the Bavli30 tractates1 as a patronymic

Abba Shaul, of the third tannaitic generation, worked as a gravedigger and as an attendant, and much of what he contributes is testimony: what he had seen with his own eyes of burial, of the Temple service and of the practice of the priests. The Mishnah preserves his reports alongside his rulings.

He is named some hundred and sixty-five times across thirty tractates, heaviest in Yoma, Pesachim, Moed Katan and Niddah. He taught that a man should make himself like his Maker — as He is gracious and merciful, so should you be gracious and merciful.

A gravedigger who testified to what he saw.
