Gematria Calculator

This calculator computes against the complete Tanakh — every word, phrase and verse of the 24 books, under seven methods, so every value you enter answers with real places in the Hebrew Bible, in canonical order.

The seven methods

There is no single gematria — a value means nothing until you say which reckoning produced it. This calculator computes seven, over the consonantal written text with the vowels and cantillation stripped. Here is each of them worked on the same word, שלום:

MethodHebrew nameRuleשלום =
Standardמספר הכרחיAlef 1 through yod 10, then by tens to kuf 100, then by hundreds to tav 400. Final letters count as their base form.376
Gadolמספר גדולAs Standard, except the five final forms continue the series: final kaf 500, mem 600, nun 700, peh 800, tzadi 900.936
Katanמספר קטןStandard values reduced to a single digit by dropping zeros, so shin is 3 rather than 300.16
Siduri (ordinal)מספר סידוריPosition in the alphabet: alef 1 through tav 22.52
AtbashאתבשEach letter swapped with its counterpart from the far end of the alphabet — alef for tav, bet for shin — then the Standard value taken.112
Peratiמספר פרטיEach letter's Standard value squared, then summed.92,536
MiluiמילויEach letter is worth the Standard value of its own name spelled out in full — alef is not 1 but אלף, which is 111. Also called Mispar Shemi.527

How this calculator is different

Most gematria calculators are cipher boxes: they take letters, do the arithmetic, and stop. This one is built on an index of the entire Hebrew Bible — the Westminster Leningrad Codex, every word, every run of adjacent words and every complete verse, precomputed under all seven methods. So a result here is never a bare number: it is every real place in Tanakh that carries the value, each shown inside its full pointed verse with an English translation, always in canonical order from Bereshit 1:1 forward. Enter 913 and you are not told an answer — you are shown בראשית standing at the head of the Torah, and everything after it.

Questions

What is gematria?

Every Hebrew letter is also a number, so every Hebrew word already carries a value — gematria is the practice of noticing that value and setting words with the same value beside one another. Our article What gematria is, and what it is not gives the full account: the methods, the Talmudic pedigree, and where the ground stops being firm.

How do I calculate the gematria of a word?

Type the word in Hebrew letters — with the on-screen keyboard or your own — and press Search. The calculator shows the word's value under all seven methods, and every word, phrase and verse of the Tanakh that shares that value, in canonical order from Bereshit 1:1 forward.

Which gematria method should I use?

Standard (mispar hechrachi) is the classical reckoning and the default — when a source quotes a gematria without naming a method, it almost always means Standard. The other six are one selection away, and a Hebrew search shows its value under all seven at once.

Can I search English words?

The calculator takes Hebrew letters and numbers. Type a number to find every Hebrew word, phrase and verse of the 24 books that carries that value, or type Hebrew to compute its value — gematria is a property of the Hebrew letters themselves.

Is the gematria calculator free?

Yes. The search engine is free — every method, every match type, the complete Tanakh. A free account also opens the daily learning, and premium membership opens the full library and supports the site.
