הַלְאֵל יְלַמֶּד־דָּעַת וְהוּא רָמִים יִשְׁפּֽוֹט
Shall any teach God knowledge? Seeing it is He that judgeth those that are high.
הַלְאֵל יִסְכָּן־גָּבֶר כִּֽי־יִסְכֹּן עָלֵימוֹ מַשְׂכִּֽיל
Can a man be profitable unto God? Or can he that is wise be profitable unto Him?
וְֽאָמַרְתָּ מַה־יָּדַֽע אֵל הַבְעַד עֲרָפֶל יִשְׁפּֽוֹט
And thou sayest: ‘What doth God know? Can He judge through the dark cloud?

Who said unto God: ‘Depart from us’; And what could the Almighty do unto them?
וְאֵל הֵרַךְ לִבִּי וְשַׁדַּי הִבְהִילָֽנִי
Yea, God hath made my heart faint, And the Almighty hath affrighted me;
וּמַה־יִּצְדַּק אֱנוֹשׁ עִם־אֵל וּמַה־יִּזְכֶּה יְלוּד אִשָּֽׁה
How then can man be just with God? Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
חַי־אֵל הֵסִיר מִשְׁפָּטִי וְשַׁדַּי הֵמַר נַפְשִֽׁי
As God liveth, who hath taken away my right; And the Almighty, who hath dealt bitterly with me;
הַֽצַעֲקָתוֹ יִשְׁמַע אֵל כִּֽי־תָבוֹא עָלָיו צָרָֽה
Will God hear his cry, When trouble cometh upon him?
אוֹרֶה אֶתְכֶם בְּיַד־אֵל אֲשֶׁר עִם־שַׁדַּי לֹא אֲכַחֵֽד
I will teach you concerning the hand of God; That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.
זֶה חֵֽלֶק־אָדָם רָשָׁע עִם־אֵל וְֽנַחֲלַת עָרִיצִים מִשַּׁדַּי יִקָּֽחוּ
This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty.
וּמָה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה כִּֽי־יָקוּם אֵל וְכִֽי־יִפְקֹד מָה אֲשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ
What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when He remembereth, what shall I answer Him?
כִּי פַחַד אֵלַי אֵיד אֵל וּמִשְּׂאֵתוֹ לֹא אוּכָֽל
For calamity from God was a terror to me, And by reason of His majesty I could do nothing.
גַּם־הוּא עָוֺן פְּלִילִי כִּֽי־כִחַשְׁתִּי לָאֵל מִמָּֽעַל
This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have lied to God that is above.
פֶּן־תֹּאמְרוּ מָצָאנוּ חָכְמָה אֵל יִדְּפֶנּוּ לֹא־אִֽישׁ
Beware lest ye say: ‘We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not man! ’
רֽוּחַ־אֵל עָשָׂתְנִי וְנִשְׁמַת שַׁדַּי תְּחַיֵּֽנִי
The spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty given me life.
הֵן־אֲנִי כְפִיךָ לָאֵל מֵחֹמֶר קֹרַצְתִּי גַם־אָֽנִי
Behold, I am toward God even as thou art; I also am formed out of the clay.
כִּֽי־בְאַחַת יְדַבֶּר־אֵל וּבִשְׁתַּיִם לֹא יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה
For God speaketh in one way, Yea in two, though man perceiveth it not.

Lo, all these things doth God work, Twice, yea thrice, with a man,

For Job hath said: ‘I am righteous, And God hath taken away my right;
לָכֵן אַנֲשֵׁי לֵבָב שִׁמְעוּ לִי חָלִלָה לָאֵל מֵרֶשַׁע וְשַׁדַּי מֵעָֽוֶל
Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be it from God, that He should do wickedness; And from the Almighty, that He should commit iniquity.
אַף־אָמְנָם אֵל לֹֽא־יַרְשִׁיעַ וְשַׁדַּי לֹֽא־יְעַוֵּת מִשְׁפָּֽט
Yea, of a surety, God will not do wickedly, Neither will the Almighty pervert justice.
כִּי לֹא עַל־אִישׁ יָשִׂים עוֹד לַהֲלֹךְ אֶל־אֵל בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט
For He doth not appoint a time unto any man, When he should go before God in judgment.
כִּֽי־אֶל־אֵל הֶאָמַר נָשָׂאתִי לֹא אֶחְבֹּֽל
For hath any said unto God: ‘I have borne chastisement, though I offend not;
כִּי יֹסִיף עַֽל־חַטָּאתוֹ פֶשַׁע בֵּינֵינוּ יִסְפּוֹק וְיֶרֶב אֲמָרָיו לָאֵֽל
For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, He clappeth his hands among us, And multiplieth his words against God.
הֲזֹאת חָשַׁבְתָּ לְמִשְׁפָּט אָמַרְתָּ צִדְקִי מֵאֵֽל
Thinkest thou this to be thy right, Or sayest thou: ‘I am righteousness before God’,
אַךְ־שָׁוְא לֹא־יִשְׁמַע אֵל וְשַׁדַּי לֹא יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה
Surely God will not hear vanity, Neither will the Almighty regard it.
הֶן־אֵל כַּבִּיר וְלֹא יִמְאָס כַּבִּיר כֹּחַֽ לֵֽב
Behold, God is mighty, yet He despiseth not any; He is mighty in strength of understanding.
הֶן־אֵל יַשְׂגִּיב בְּכֹחוֹ מִי כָמֹהוּ מוֹרֶֽה
Behold, God doeth loftily in His power; Who is a teacher like Him?
הֶן־אֵל שַׂגִּיא וְלֹא נֵדָע מִסְפַּר שָׁנָיו וְלֹא־חֵֽקֶר
Behold, God is great, beyond our knowledge; The number of His years is unsearchable.
יַרְעֵם אֵל בְּקוֹלוֹ נִפְלָאוֹת עֹשֶׂה גְדֹלוֹת וְלֹא נֵדָֽע
God thundereth marvellously with His voice; Great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend.
מִנִּשְׁמַת־אֵל יִתֶּן־קָרַח וְרֹחַב מַיִם בְּמוּצָֽק
By the breath of God ice is given, And the breadth of the waters is straitened.
הַאֲזִינָה זֹּאת אִיּוֹב עֲמֹד וְהִתְבּוֹנֵן נִפְלְאוֹת אֵֽל
Hearken unto this, O Job; Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
מִי יָכִין לָעֹרֵב צֵידוֹ כִּֽי־ילדו אֶל־אֵל יְשַׁוֵּעוּ יִתְעוּ לִבְלִי־אֹֽכֶל
Who provideth for the raven his prey, When his young ones cry unto God, and wander for lack of food?
וְאִם־זְרוֹעַ כָּאֵל לָךְ וּבְקוֹל כָּמֹהוּ תַרְעֵֽם
Or hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like Him?
הוּא רֵאשִׁית דַּרְכֵי־אֵל הָעֹשׂוֹ יַגֵּשׁ חַרְבּֽוֹ
He is the beginning of the ways of God; He only that made him can make His sword to approach unto him.
מִשֵּׂתוֹ יָגוּרוּ אֵלִים מִשְּׁבָרִים יִתְחַטָּֽאוּ
When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid; by reason of despair they are beside themselves.
נִשָּׂא לְבָבֵנוּ אֶל־כַּפָּיִם אֶל־אֵל בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם
Let us lift up our heart with our hands Unto God in the heavens.

וְעָשָׂה כִרְצוֹנוֹ הַמֶּלֶךְ וְיִתְרוֹמֵם וְיִתְגַּדֵּל עַל־כָּל־אֵל וְעַל אֵל אֵלִים יְדַבֵּר נִפְלָאוֹת וְהִצְלִיחַ עַד־כָּלָה זַעַם כִּי נֶחֱרָצָה נֶעֱשָֽׂתָה

and said: ‘I beseech Thee, O LORD, the God of heaven, the great and awful God, that keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments;
וְעַתָּה כִּבְשַׂר אַחֵינוּ בְּשָׂרֵנוּ כִּבְנֵיהֶם בָּנֵינוּ וְהִנֵּה אֲנַחְנוּ כֹבְשִׁים אֶת־בָּנֵינוּ וְאֶת־בְּנֹתֵינוּ לַעֲבָדִים וְיֵשׁ מִבְּנֹתֵינוּ נִכְבָּשׁוֹת וְאֵין לְאֵל יָדֵנוּ וּשְׂדֹתֵינוּ וּכְרָמֵינוּ לַאֲחֵרִֽים
Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.’

Nevertheless in Thy manifold mercies Thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for Thou art a gracious and merciful God.
וְעַתָּה אֱלֹהֵינוּ הָאֵל הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא שׁוֹמֵר הַבְּרִית וְהַחֶסֶד אַל־יִמְעַט לְפָנֶיךָ אֵת כָּל־הַתְּלָאָה אֲֽשֶׁר־מְצָאַתְנוּ לִמְלָכֵינוּ לְשָׂרֵינוּ וּלְכֹהֲנֵינוּ וְלִנְבִיאֵנוּ וְלַאֲבֹתֵינוּ וּלְכָל־עַמֶּךָ מִימֵי מַלְכֵי אַשּׁוּר עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּֽה
