Yaakov's eleventh son and firstborn of Rachel, sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers out of jealousy over their father's favor and his dreams (Genesis 37). He rose to become viceroy of Egypt under Pharaoh, preserved his family through famine, and his descendants became the tribes of Efrayim and Menashe (Genesis 39-50). וַיַּעֲזֹב כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ בְּיַד־יוֹסֵף וְלֹא־יָדַע אִתּוֹ מְאוּמָה כִּי אִם־הַלֶּחֶם אֲשֶׁר־הוּא אוֹכֵל וַיְהִי יוֹסֵף יְפֵה־תֹאַר וִיפֵה מַרְאֶֽה

And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
וַיִּפְקֹד שַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים אֶת־יוֹסֵף אִתָּם וַיְשָׁרֶת אֹתָם וַיִּהְיוּ יָמִים בְּמִשְׁמָֽר
And the captain of the guard charged Joseph to be with them, and he ministered unto them; and they continued a season in ward.
וַיָּבֹא אֲלֵיהֶם יוֹסֵף בַּבֹּקֶר וַיַּרְא אֹתָם וְהִנָּם זֹעֲפִֽים
And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and saw them, and, behold, they were sad.

And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him: ‘In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;
