The second patriarch, son of Avraham and Sarah born in their old age as God had promised — his name reflecting the Hebrew word for “laughter,” both Avraham's and Sarah's own reactions to the news (Genesis 17:17, 18:12) and Sarah's words at his birth, “God has made laughter for me” (Genesis 21:6). He was bound by his father on the altar at Mount Moriah, married Rivkah, fathered Esav and Yaakov, and passed the covenant blessing to Yaakov (Genesis 22, 24-27). The count of this spelling includes both the patriarch and ordinary uses of that verb.
