A judge from Gilad, driven out by his brothers and later recalled to lead against the Ammonites. He made a rash vow before battle that cost him his own daughter, and he later fought the Efrayimites at the Jordan, where the word “shibboleth” exposed those who could not pronounce it (Judges 11-12). This spelling is shared with an ordinary Hebrew word built on a root meaning “to open,” so the count reflects both uses.
