An official under Shlomo who led the ten northern tribes to break away after Rechavam's harsh answer, becoming the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel. To keep the people from Jerusalem he set up golden calves at Dan and Beit-El, an act the text repeatedly cites as “the sin of Yerovam” (1 Kings 11-14).
But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
Then the men of Judah gave a shout; and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.
Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah; and the LORD smote him, and he died.
A spelling is not a name. The written word ירבעם stands 89 times in the corpus, which is a different question and often a different number: the same letters can spell another name or an ordinary word, and a name written with a particle attached is a word that search never returns. It is here, as itself.
