יַעֲקֹב Yaakov
Often spelled Jacob in English. Every verse in which this name stands — 348 places, in canonical order, first appearance to last. These are the occurrences our own corpus tags as this name, counting every form the text writes it in, which is the number on the list.
Third patriarch, younger twin of Yitzchak and Rivkah, who obtained the birthright and blessing from his brother Esav and, after wrestling through the night with a man at the Yabok, was renamed Yisrael (Genesis 25-32). He fathered twelve sons who became the tribes of Israel and, reunited with his son Yosef, settled his family in Egypt (Genesis 46-47). His name plays on the Hebrew word for “heel,” which the text itself notes at his birth (Genesis 25:26), so the count includes both uses.
